So you’ve decided to open up a small business and you’re going to work out of your house. How many people have laughed and said you could work in your pajamas? Whenever someone has said this to me I always ask if they work in their pajamas. Seriously. It’s a stupid thing to say. Even when I worked a corporate job from home I got this kind of flack.
People say dress for the job you want to have. You want to be a successful business owner, right? An entrepreneur. A creative genius. A leader in your field. Dress for that. Dress like you’re giving someone a studio tour and they’re bringing their checkbook!
It doesn’t have to be a suit and heels or anything, but I believe it’s important to separate your work time from your leisure time as distinctly as possible. Most of us have our work space separated - a studio, workshop or office. I don’t work in bed or on the couch, why should I dress like I do? Even if you’re hiding behind a computer and never see anyone except the UPS man, you shouldn’t work in your slops. It just sets you up to be lazy, cut corners and maybe even be less productive.
Whenever I’m going to do anything connected to my jewelry business, I put on clothes I wouldn’t be embarrassed to be seen in. And no, I’m not one of those people who wears their slippers on a plane. Oy vey. Have some pride people!
Jeans. Chinos. A decent shirt. Jewelry. Hair brushed. Ready to go. Ready to work. To be professional, pulled together and in the right frame of mind for creativity, customer service, marketing, advertising, making connections and contacts. Even writing this blog.
So if your motivation is slipping or you’re not as focused as you should be; try changing your clothes. You just might end up changing your mindset, too.
